Chapter 6

Peter awoke to a cold wet nose pressed to the warm skin of his belly. Unless Evan had stuck his nose in a tray of ice-cold water, Hazel had been allowed into the bedroom overnight.

“I can’t believe I never wake up,” he murmured as he greeted the dog.

“Huh?” Evan lifted his head and looked at Hazel. “How did you get in here?”

Hazel thumped her tail at Evan.

“Again.”

Evan furrowed his brow. “Huh?”

Peter rolled his eyes. “You do realise that I know you sneak out and get Hazel during the night.”

“I didn’t move all night. My arm is still under your head, and pins and needles. Ow hell that hurts!” Evan pulled his arm from under Peter’s head and waved it around like a madman.

Peter rolled over onto his back partly to watch Evan’s antics and partly to avoid being smacked in the face. Hazel crept over and buried herself in the crook of Peter’s arm. “I think you’re frightening the dog,” he pointed out.

Evan stopped for a moment and scratched behind Hazel’s floppy ears. “Sorry, girl. Daddy’s got a dead arm. I’ve got to get the blood circulating again.” He got out of bed and rotated his shoulder. “We’ve really got to stop doing this.”

“We can’t have slept in that position all night,” Peter said. “I know you sneak Hazel in.”

“Once or twice when she was making so much noise it was doing my head in, but normally I sleep through the night.”

If it was an act, it was a very good act. Evan looked completely genuine. “You’re telling me our three month old puppy has learnt how to open the door? Has she grown three feet and opposable thumbs?”

“How the hell do I know how she got out of the kitchen? All I do know is that unless one of us has started sleep walking and managed to avoid waking the other one up, Hazel is the one doing the escaping. Hold on.” Evan left the bedroom.

Peter stayed where he was, warm and tucked up next to Hazel, not anxious to move even when he heard Evan exclaim, “Cheeky mare.”

“What did she do?”

Evan walked back and bounced onto the bed. “Don’t you grumble at me, young lady,” he said to Hazel who’d not appreciated being disturbed. “I’m not the one who’s learnt to push the door open.”

Peter furrowed his brow. “The kitchen door?”

“No, the front door. Yes, the kitchen door.”

“Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.”

Evan flipped him off. “Come on, menace, I want to see you open the door.” He picked her up and left the bedroom again.

“She won’t do it, you know,” Peter called. He knew he had to get up soon but if Evan didn’t want to rush who was he to force the issue?

“You have no faith in me.” Evan returned without Hazel.

Peter frowned. “What have you done with her?”

Evan grinned. “Just wait.”

“We could be here for hours.”

“Wanna bet?” Evan raised an eyebrow. “A fiver she’s back in bed in ten minutes.”

“You’re on.”

Evan curled up against Peter.
